Rob Roy’s Reins

Many years ago one of my students had a wonderful horse named Rob Roy. Everyone, from the newest beginner to the most advanced rider, rode him. He loved to jump, but he liked to do things his way.

When you ride a jumping course, it is customary to trot a circle at the end of the ring before beginning the jumping. During the circle, Rob Roy would tug at the reins with his head. If the rider let them slip through her hands as much as he needed, he would then bring his head up and continue around the jumps in perfect and quiet style. But if the rider was ignorant and didn’t let go, Rob Roy would stick his nose out against the reins and tear around the course as fast as he could, then stop dead at the end as if to say, “Humph. Who needs you?”
